It is important to share the overarching reasoning behind certain decisions made at publishing companies with the people we sell books to… So, in the upcoming posts we’ll be sharing the intentions and driving forces behind our major series. Today’s post is about the MNT (Micro & Nano Technologies) series which has just launched its first two (2) titles.
Mission Statement
The aim of this series is to disseminate the latest developments in small scale technologies with a particular emphasis for accessible and practical content. These books will appeal to engineers from industry, academia, and government sectors.
People
Dr. Nigel Hollingworth is the publisher and acquisitions editor for the MNT series.
Dr. Jeremy Ramsden is the Series Editor for the MNT series. He is a Professor of Nanotechnology at Cranfield University, United Kingdom and Editor-in-Chief of two journals.
Outlook
The first two books in the series: Microdrops and Digital Microfluidics; and Micromixers have just been published in February 2008. We expect to publish approximately 8 more titles in 2008. More information on those titles is forthcoming…

There have been a couple comments from purchaser’s of Sittig’s Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens, 5th Editionon what exactly the Sittig’s Wireless product is.
If you have purchased the print volumes, you will see a yellow card blown into the first volume that introduces Sittig’s Wireless along with contact information and a registration number. Anyone who buys the print product is given 6 months free access from the day they sign up (not from the day they purchase the books). So, here’s what it’s all about…
Imagine you are a first responder (firefighter, safety engineer, health professional) responding to a chemical accident. Arriving upon the scene, you are told what chemical(s) are involved and you need to find out quickly what to do. So, you grab your internet capable cell phone and go to the Bookmark that says “Sittig’s Wireless.” You search for the chemical name (or trade names/synonyms) or browse the alphabetical list and within seconds you have access to the information you need to make the right decisions. Basically, the immense amount of information contained within a two-volume, 3000 page, 16 pound reference is now in the palm of your hand.
Certainly, not everyone will be interested in Sittig’s Wireless…but we believe that for first responders there could be no other tool more valuable in responding to chemical accidents. If you have any other questions about Sittig’s Wireless, please let us know by emailing the Sales Department.

The second book in the Micro & Nano Technologies series (MNT 2) will be published this week. Micromixers: Fundamentals, Design, and Fabrication, by Nam-Trung Nguyen is aimed toward engineers in the chemical and biochemical industries as well as students in chemistry and life sciences. Micromixing is the predominant process taking place in most microfluidic devices for medical diagnostics, drug discovery, genetic sequencing, proteomics, and chemical production. It also has implications for national security via portable detection systems for chemical weapons and explosives.
Nam-Trung Nguyen is an Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He wrote a ground-breaking book on microfluidics in 2002, which was the first ever on the market. He has also written five books on microsystems and has contributed to 16 other books. He has written more than 70 journal articles as well more than 60 conference papers. He has been granted seven patents and is listed by ISI Essential Science Indicators as one of the “Most Cited Scientists in Engineering.”

The first book in the Micro & Nano Technologies Series (MNT 1) has just been released. Microdrops and Digital Microfluidics, by Jean Berthier is written for engineers, scientists and developers in biotechnology, nanotechnology, MEMS, and pharmaceuticals. The book is also an excellent resource for students learning the fundamentals of microfluidics.
Jean Berthier is a Scientist at CEA/LETI (Laboratory of Electronics, Technology and Information) in Grenoble, France in the domain of Microsystems for Biotechnology. He is also an Associate Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Grenoble. He is an expert member at the OMNT (Observatoire des Micro et Nano Technologies) and EON (European Observatory for Nanotechnology).
